Jeanette Anne Dimech (born October 10, 1951 in London , England ), stage name Jeanette , is a Spanish singer.

Life

Since Jeanette's grandparents ran an import-export business, her parents lived first in England, where she was born, and then in Chicago and Los Angeles , where she grew up. Twelve-year-old Jeanette returned to Barcelona with her mother after her parents divorced .

In the mid-1960s she learned to play the guitar and began composing her own songs. It was based on American folk music. Their role models were Bob Dylan , Donovan and the Byrds . She later joined a student band called "Pic-Nic" as a singer, which had a great success in 1967 with a folk version of the Spanish nursery rhyme Cállate niña . Other well-known songs were Amanecer and No digas nada .

When the band broke up in the late 1960s, she moved to Vienna with her husband, the Hungarian musician Laszlo Kristof. In the early 1970s she started a solo career and had a great success in Spanish-speaking countries with her first single Soy rebelde . With the French and English versions, it also became known in Europe. This and other songs from the pen of Manuel Alejandro, such as El muchacho de los ojos tristes and Estoy triste , established her as an artist in Spain.

Porque te vas

Her greatest success Porque te vas (“Why are you leaving?”) Was composed by José Luis Perales and was relatively unnoticed when it was recorded in 1974. It was only when the song was used in the 1977 film Breed Raven… (Cría cuervos) by Carlos Saura and this film was awarded a prize in Cannes (Grand Jury Prize) that the song also became internationally known and hit the charts. In Austria it reached number 13, in Switzerland number 4 and in Germany Jeanette even had a number one hit .

In 1977 there were two German-language, relatively unsuccessful versions of Porque te vas by Sabrina and Nina Lizell under the title ... and you want to go . Patsy Kensit and Elizabeth Hurley sing an English version (You're Leaving Me) in the German thriller Der Skipper (1990). In 1999 the Masterboy group once again had chart successes in German-speaking countries with a cover version. The Cologne band Erdmöbel played a new German version for their album No.1 Hits called Weil du fortgehst ein .

Jeanette then did not have a similar success internationally. As a singer she continued to be successful in Spain and at times in France until the 1990s.
