Porto Rafti ( Greek Πόρτο Ράφτη , tailor port ') is a coastal town in Ostattika . The medieval name comes from the island of Rafti ( Greek Νησί Ράφτης ) in front of the city . On this is a Roman statue, which the residents interpreted as a representation of a tailor. The official name of the city is Limin Mesogias ( Greek Λιμήν Μεσογείας , port of the Mesogia region '), but it is also called Limani Markopoulou ( Greek Λιμάνι Μαρκοπούλου , port of Markopoulo ').

geography

The islands of Rafti and Raftipoula in the bay of Porto Rafti.

Today's Porto Rafti is 35 kilometers from Athens , is located around the Bay of Rafti and includes the two suburbs Avlaki ( Greek Αυλάκι ) and Agios Spyridonas ( Greek Άγιος Σπυρίδωνας ). In ancient times the Demen Prasiai in the west and Steiria in the north and the fortress Koroni on the peninsula of the same name in the south were located in the urban area . In front of the bay is the 77 meter high island of Rafti and the smaller island of Raftipoula ( Greek Νησί Ραφτηπουλα , tailor's daughter '). In front of the Agios Nikolaos peninsula, also known as Punta, is the islet Prasonisi ('green island'). Porto Rafti is surrounded by mountains - Mavronoros to the south, Merenda to the west and Perati to the north.

history

In Greek mythology , it is reported that Erysichthon was buried in Prasiai. It was assumed that his grave was on the island of Rafti below the Roman seated figure. In the north at Agios Spyridonas, Mycenaean tombs from the 12th century BC were discovered. Pottery shards from this period were found on the islands of Rafti and Raftipoula. In the 7th and 6th centuries BC The port served as the starting point for the annual festival of sacrifices on Delos . From Roman times, pottery shards were found on rafti and raftipoula. The headless marble statue on Rafti probably dates from the 2nd century AD, is 3 meters high and stands on a 2-meter high base. Who the female figure looking out to sea represents is controversial. One attempt to explain it would be the personification of ecumenism , i.e. the entire inhabited world.

At the end of April 1941, after Greece surrendered in World War II , the Allies evacuated their troops via Porto Rafti.
