Portobello on the Otago Peninsula |
Portobello is a small town in the urban area of Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The name for the settlement was borrowed from a village in Scotland , 5 km from Edinburgh by the sea.
geography
The place is about 12 km east-northeast of the city center of Dunedin on Latham Bay of Otago Harbor . The place can be reached via the northern shore road of the Otago Peninsula and is halfway along this road, between the city center of Dunedin and Taiaroa Head , the easternmost tip of the peninsula.
history
The history of Portobello is closely related to the settlement of the Otago region by European settlers (see the settlement history of Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula ). From the turn of the century 1900 Portobello became one of the most important excursion destinations in the region. Those who didn't want to undertake the strenuous journey by car across the embankment could come over on the excursion steamer. But with the Great Depression (1929–1941) at the latest , Dunedin lost its economic importance and Portobello lost its recreational value.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 1,113 inhabitants, 0.8% more than in the 2006 census.
tourism
Every year, countless tourists pass the place on their trip to Taiaroa Head to see the king albatrosses , yellow-eyed penguins and the seal colonies on the east coast of the Otago Peninsula . Apart from a few cafes, small accommodations and snacks, Portobello doesn't have much to offer, unless you drive 1.5 km over a gravel road on the small peninsula to the New Zealand Marine Studies Center . There is a marine exhibition with an attached marine aquarium to visit.
Today there are many small artisans and galleries in the place, as incidentally along the entire promenade of Otago Harbor , which allow tourists a glimpse into the art scene of the region with time.
