Position Among the Stars ( Dutch : Stand van de Sterren ) is a documentary of the Dutch - Indonesian filmmaker Leonard Retel Helmrich from the year 2010 . After Eye of the Day and Shape of the Moon, the film is the third part of a trilogy about an Indonesian family who lives in a densely populated district of Jakarta .
action
The film deals with upheavals in Indonesia, which go hand in hand with political upheavals , the tumult of democracy , the corruption that characterizes the country and the growing gap between rich and poor. The story is told using the example of the Christian Sjamsuddin family, who live in the midst of the largest Muslim population in the world. The three-generation family struggles with their future, income, schooling, religion and class differences.
The orphan Tari lives with her grandmother Rumijah and her uncle Bakti. Tari is the first of her family to have the prospect of a higher education. Although she prefers to spend her time with friends in the malls , for example to buy blue contact lenses or a mobile phone , she passes her final exam. The family uses the house's mortgage to finance their studies at a university.
Bakti trying his luck with the breeding of fighting fish on which he is betting money. He frustrates his wife Sri, who runs a small street stall, by using holy water for his breeding. In revenge, she deep-fried his fish. Poor grandmother Rumijah is pushed back into the city by Bakti from her life in the country so that she can look after her offspring and Tari is exposed to traditional values . Bakti's brother Dwi is annoyed because the grandmother teaches her grandson Bagus Christian prayers, even though Dwi brings up his son Muslim . In addition, the house almost burns down as they switch from cooking with oil to gas.
backgrounds
Leonard Retel Helmrich watched the Sjamsuddin family with the camera for twelve years. He filmed with the film style he developed himself , which he calls Single Shot Cinema . The result is a trilogy that deals with the topics of economy, politics and religion in Indonesia. In addition, the generations of the family each reflect a tense: the past, present and future of Indonesia. The films stand on their own - you don't have to see the previous films to understand. Position Among the Stars is about religion and the country's future. These films made Helmrich internationally known and received awards at film festivals such as IDFA , Tribeca and Sundance .
