Potokaki ( Greek Ποτοκάκι ( n. Sg. )) Is a coastal settlement in the south of the Greek island of Samos, characterized by tourism .

location

The former fishing village is located on the Bay of Tigani (Όρμος Τηγάνι) in the immediate vicinity of the airport a little more than two kilometers west of Pythagorio .

history

During the reign of the Polycrates , a secondary port of the ancient city of Samos was located at today's location.

On the map of Samos in Piri Reis's kitab-ı Bahriy navigator's book from 1525, an anchorage is marked at the point. At the time of the Principality of Samos in the 19th century, Potokaki was the port of Chora with some warehouses.

Until the second half of the 20th century, Potokaki was a fishing village with a few distilleries and soap factories. After Potokaki was officially recognized as a settlement by the then rural community of Chora (Κοινότητα Χώρας) in 1961 and the island's airport opened in 1963, a tourist offer increasingly developed in the town. Potokaki does not have a closed townscape and is characterized by small hotels, apartment complexes, taverns and night clubs. In the past few years Potokaki Beach has been awarded the Blue Flag several times.

Population development of Potokaki

Ludwig Ross mentions that the place was inhabited in 1841. The results of the Greek population censuses, for the first time from 1961 onwards, give population information on Potokaki.
