The Pourtalesiidae (Pourtalesiidae) are a family of irregular sea ​​urchins that live in the deep sea . They are secondary bilaterally symmetrical and elongated in shape. Representatives of this family were first discovered by Louis-François de Pourtalès . The genus Pourtalesia was named after him, after which the family is named. With them, as with the other holasteroida , the lantern of Aristotle, which is characteristic of most sea urchins, is missing . The family is already known from the Upper Cretaceous Period ( Maastrichtian ) and spread around the world.
