Louis-François de Pourtalès (also: Louis-François Graf von Pourtalès ) (born March 4, 1823 in Neuchâtel NE ; † July 17, 1880 in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts , USA ) was a Swiss-American marine geologist and marine biologist .

Life

Louis-François de Pourtalès was the son of the mathematician, extraordinary Prussian State Councilor and lieutenant colonel in the artillery in the Principality of Neuchâtel Louis-Auguste Comte de Pourtalès (1796-1870) and Elisabeth-Frédérique nee. Sandoz-Rollin. He attended the Neuchâtel Academy, where he was one of Louis Agassiz's students . From 1842 to 1846 he studied natural sciences in Germany, including at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In 1843 he became a member of the Corps Borussia Bonn . After graduating, he went to Boston , where he met Agassiz again and worked together scientifically. In 1848 he joined the United States Coast Survey and married Elisabeth Bachmann, a Boston native from Lucerne. De Pourtalès researched the geology and fauna of the Atlantic coast of North America to the Caribbean and accompanied Agassiz to South America. After Agassiz's death, he and his son Alexander Agassiz headed the Louis Agassiz Museum of Comparative Zoology as a research assistant from 1873 to 1880 . De Pourtalès was a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1873 . In 1871 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Haliotis pourtalesii , a species of the genus abalone ( Haliotis ), and the moluskenreiche Pourtales plateau south of the Florida Keys are named after him.
