Prelude et fugue en Si majeur

Prelude et fugue en Si majeur (Prelude and Fugue in B major) is an organ work by Marcel Dupré .

It was published in 1912 together with two other works as Opus 7 by Leduc and is dedicated to René Vierne, the younger brother of Louis Vierne . Technically, the work is one of the most demanding organ works. In any case, it is the most difficult of the three preludes and fugues of op.7. Rapid toccat figurations in ff in the prelude overarch a relatively simple but distinctive theme in the pedal, which is then taken over by the treble up to a half-close in the subdominant. Then this beginning part is repeated in pp in A flat major with closed swell, until the main key is reached again, where motif parts of the theme appear alternately in the treble and in the bass, always surrounded by continuous sixteenth-note movement. After a dialogue between manual and pedal, the next section leads the subject between treble and bass closely and leads again to the alternation of violent manual and pedal movements. The prelude ends with a pedal solo before the final chord. The fugue theme spans over an octave and a half and is extremely difficult to play on the pedal. That is perhaps the reason why it appears there only once in its original form, namely in the exposition. Secondary motifs, partly derived from the theme, then deny the further course, the rhythm of which is often very tricky. After a reminder of the theme of the prelude, there is a connection between the original form of the theme in the treble and its enlargement in the pedal bass. Because of the parallel course of treble and bass, the individual components of the theme have to be gathered there to ensure that both theme versions appear at the same time. The fugue closes with the virtuoso alternation of manual and pedal figures from the prelude, but here more full-grip, which has a certain retarding effect aimed at the end.

"From the accompanying work of the prelude, which is attached to a not-too-imaginative topic, a complicated fugue-topic arises by itself, the level of difficulty of which is only known to those who try to play it on the pedal."
