action

The twelve-year-old Holger Radtke fled with his adoptive parents in 1954 from the GDR to Frankfurt am Main , Praunheim district . Holger is an average student, but is staging his first play with "Phyrramus et Thisbe" from Ovid's Metamorphoses. At the age of 17 he met his future wife, who also encouraged him to stand by his homosexuality.

His first short film Von Rosa von Praunheim was bought by Hessischer Rundfunk in 1968 - the starting shot for his career as a film director. In 1971 he published his documentary film Not the homosexual is perverse, but the situation in which he lives and is thus considered to be a co-founder of the political gay and lesbian movement in Germany.

In addition to his life story, Praunheim also documents the influence that the Frankfurt environment has on his artistic work in the film. He visits his former German teacher and follows the noble family of the "von Praunheim" family.

criticism

The film service judges that the “sympathetic documentary meanders through two decades, whereby the dramaturgically loose structure follows the personal chronology of the director and is linked to formative places and people, whereby historical circumstances are not completely left out”. The film is a “stroll through one's own biography without claiming analytical complexity, yet multi-layered, shaped by a certain age wisdom”.
