The private high school Borromäum is an archbishop's private high school in Salzburg and until autumn 2020 the last pure boys' school in Austria. The archdiocese of Salzburg maintains the school .
history
In 1849, the Konvikt of the Archdiocese of Salzburg , which had existed since 1836, received its own educational institution: the "Collegium Borromaeum" in the former Graf Lodron Laterano Primogenitur Palace ( integrated into the Neues Mozarteum building complex since 1978 ). In 1879 it was officially recognized as the "Prince Archbishop's Private High School Collegium Borromaeum". In 1910 it moved to the Arenberggrund ( Parsch district ). The plans for this were drawn up by Matthäus Schlager and Balthasar Kaltner (Auxiliary Bishop of Salzburg). The building was inaugurated by Cardinal Johannes Katschthaler .
In 1939 it was converted into the "Nazi Educational Institution Kreuzberg".
In 1946, the Borromäum resumed its school and boarding school operations. The Borromäum was renovated between 2002 and 2006. Today, however, there is no longer any boarding school in the Borromäum.
School grounds
The EB.-PG. Borromäum has extensive outdoor areas including several soccer fields, a beach volleyball court, a street soccer field, sprint and long jump courses and a running lap called the "Borromäumsrunde". A spacious sports hall rounds off the sporting offer.
The building houses an art hall, two work rooms, two music halls and a meditation room. In addition, a biology / chemistry room, a physics room, a library and two large computer rooms. The old gymnasium is now the so-called "ballroom" and is used for celebrations and events. The central part of the building also houses the students' dining room and an in-house church. There is also an oratory on the top floor.
The meals of the students and the teachers are freshly prepared in the kitchen of the house, during the big break the students can also buy snacks at a kiosk in the atrium of the building.
Major reconstruction work on the site and restructuring of the school operations are currently being planned.
School operation
Two to three first classes are accepted per year of the lower level, each with a focus (natural sciences or music) that is continued at least up to the upper level. Depending on the number of students in the year entering the upper level, one to three classes will be continued (after possible merging), whereby the focus is retained if possible.
From autumn 2020, the school will accept girls for the first time in its more than 100-year history. As a result, there will be no more pure boys' schools in Austria from autumn 2020.
