Progresso Associação do Sambizanga is a football club from Luanda , the capital of Angola . The association is often referred to as the "Sambilas". He plays in the highest Angolan league, the Girabola .

history

The association was founded on November 17th, 1975, 6 days after the country gained independence from Portugal . It was created through the merger of the three associations Juventude Unida do Bairro Alfredo (JUBA), Juventista and Vaza , all from the Sambizanga district , now a municipality of the city of Luanda.

In the 1980s the association expanded its international contacts. He was the first African club to play in the legendary Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro . The club later expanded its activities to other sports. In addition to the successful women's football department, there were also athletics, sailing, tennis, volleyball and chess.

Progresso won his first title in professional football in 1996, when he won the national cup ( Taça de Angola ).

The club played its home games in different stadiums, such as the Estádio Cidadela , Estádio dos Coqueiros or the 4,000-seat Estádio de São Paulo . The Estádio Mário Santiago is now the home of the Progresso. At the end of 2013, it was announced that the club intended to take over the stadium from the Luanda city council.
