He has to meet the needs of the tenants in order to keep them or gain new ones and keep an eye on the finances and construction costs. In a 2D top view, the player can build up to 70 floors up and up to 10 in the basement.

The game received mainly positive feedback from the press. IGN praised Project Highrise for giving the player the opportunity to create things quickly and to make progress thanks to its inviting, simple and fast-paced interface and interface. Rock, Paper, Shotgun praises the fact that the game is complex due to the interaction of the rules, building objects and tenant needs, but you can still learn the game mechanics quickly and see what is happening in the building.

Project Highrise, on the other hand, was criticized for its artistic style, lack of overview functions and the choice of colors, which, however, should also increase the bustle factor . Rooms are sometimes perceived as too similar, which means that larger skyscrapers could look monotonous. Cost management also proves to be difficult in some cases and passages seem too monotonous and lengthy and require a lot of patience and sensitivity on the part of the player. The residents and staff often appear static and not very individual. The design of the surface is reminiscent of an Excel table.

Due to the similar game concept to the game Sim Tower from 1994, it is considered by many to be its spiritual successor.
