Project Hope is a 1961 American short documentary film produced by Frank P. Bibas . At the 34th Academy Awards in 1962 , the film was awarded an Oscar .
content
The film captures the maiden voyage of the "SS Hope", a hospital ship. The ship set sail from San Francisco on September 22, 1960, destined for Indonesia . During the long voyage, the hospital ship's volunteer staff were able to train hundreds of doctors and nurses and eventually open an orthopedic rehabilitation center in Indonesia. Thousands of people who suffered from cancer , leprosy , infections and / and malnutrition were treated.
It was an absolute novelty that a counterpart from a developing country was taken on board for training for every member of the medical staff from the USA.
Production, background
The film was produced under the supervision of Macmanus, John & Adams, Inc.
Frank P. Bibas accompanied medical volunteers who were on board the "SS Hope" for three months on their maiden voyage to Indonesia.
The US aid organization "Project Hope" (Health Opportunities for People Everywhere) chartered the ship "Hope" from 1960 to 1973, which was a hospital ship of the US Navy from 1945 to 1958. Under his new name, the ship was on its maiden voyage to Indonesia, further stops were subsequently South Vietnam, Peru, Ecuador, Guinea, Nicaragua, Colombia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Jamaica and Brazil. In 1974 the ship stopped its service.
The film was supposed to show that America is a good friend to other peoples in the world, and that it stands up for the needy and helps them. It also served as a fundraiser and has been translated into 23 languages to further increase its reach.
