Since the fourth offshoot of the game series, Nintendo has held part of the franchise rights and developed in cooperation with Tecmo exclusively for Nintendo platforms.

The player is in the role of a young girl named Miku Hinasaki and has to find out what happened to her brother Mafuyu , who has disappeared without a trace . You do not have any weapons at your disposal , you have to fight the emerging opponents, who all have individual characteristics and differ in strength and speed and thus represent a considerable challenge, with a special camera , called the camera obscura . In the course of the game, the camera can be upgraded to increase its attack power and thus master the increasingly stronger opponents.

action

For several days now, Miku has been missing her brother Mafuyu , who about a month ago was looking for the famous writer Junsei Takamine , who disappeared without a trace while researching his new novel. It struck the young journalist Mafuyu as strange. His research leads him to an old abandoned villa in the forest, which is said to have once belonged to a powerful landowner who had strictly ruled over the surrounding area. In the villa, Mafuyu found traces and notes from Takamine and his employees, which suggest a bizarre and sinister past of the run-down building. Inquisitive he wanted to find out more secrets and found that he was not alone in the dark old mansion.

Mafuyu's sister is very worried about her brother and decides to go and find out what happened. In doing so, she finds out that he was on his way to the huge abandoned Villa Himuro and now sets off there herself, without knowing what horrible awaits her.

characters

  • Miku Hinasaki : She is the main character in Project Zero and has a "sixth sense" for the supernatural. She can see things that other people cannot. In the course of the game she finds the old camera "Camera Obskura" that she and her brother received from her mother and uses it as a weapon against the ghosts ( Yūrei ).
  • Mafuyu Hinasaki : He's Mikus brother and the only one who understands it correctly. He is Miku's only living relative since her parents died. He too has a sixth sense and can capture the souls of spirits in a photo with the Obscura camera.
  • Junsei Takamine : He is a writer and Mafuyu's teacher and friend. For his new book, he researches the ancient rituals of the Himuro family on site in their villa and disappears without a trace.
  • Miyuki Hinasaki : She is the mother of Miku and Mafuyu. She left the camera obscurity to her two children after her death . She also has supernatural abilities and spent her childhood as an outsider, as did her two children.
  • Tomoe Hirasaka : She is Takamine's assistant and also has a "sixth sense" for the supernatural.
  • Koji Ogata : He's the editor of Takamine , and he also accompanied him on the way to the villa to help him with the research.
  • Ryozo Munakata : A folklorist who moved to the Himuro mansion with his wife Yae and Mikoto Munakata to do research on ancient cults in the area. He also hoped that the fresh mountain air would be good for his daughter Mikoto. Everything seemed to be going well for the family until one day Mikoto disappeared while playing demon hunting with her friends.
  • Yae Munakata : Ryozo's wife, Mikoto's mother, and Miku's great-grandmother who lived in the villa where Mikoto one day finds a camera. Yae starts taking photos of the villa and is shocked by what can be seen in the pictures. Especially when she begins to see these ghosts in reality. When her daughter went missing shortly afterwards, she couldn't take it.
  • Mikoto Munakata : Mikoto is the daughter of Yae and Ryozo Munakata and disappeared one day while playing with her friends. But as mysterious as it disappeared, it reappeared four days after the death of her parents.

Special features and gameplay

Project Zero is the first survival horror video game to be entirely without weapons and therefore uses a different method of defeating opponents. There is also no extreme representation of violence and more subtle shuddering the atmosphere of the game is created.

For the first time in a video game, you can only fight ghosts , wandering souls who cannot find peace. There are both good spirits to be redeemed and evil spirits who have a cruel past. You have to take photos of the ghosts and thus drain their spiritual energy in order to destroy them. By collecting ghost points, various bonus functions of the camera can be activated, which lead to an improvement in the magical attack power, range and speed, which is very important in order to be able to defeat the increasingly stronger opponents.

There are different types of films; Type 14, Type 37, Type 61, Type 90, which can be inserted into the camera obscura , which affects the strength and attack power of the camera. When saving, which is only possible in certain places, the inventory of the inferior quality type 14 film can be refreshed. (from part 4)

Furthermore, you have a flashlight and a map of the house on which you can determine your position, because the house is large and designed like a labyrinth, which quickly leads to confusion. Also it comes in Project Zero to solving puzzles in order to open doors to new areas and drive forward the story.

The camera control takes a lot of getting used to and is cumbersome, which can be a danger with fast ghosts if you have no way of running away or evading.

At the beginning the game has no selection for different levels of difficulty. However, there is still the option to unlock a so-called nightmare mode.

Reviews and backgrounds

Project Zero received good reviews in many places for the game's innovative gameplay and atmosphere. The graphics and the sound were also praised.

There was negative criticism for the linear course of the game and the short playing time. Furthermore, the somewhat sluggish control of the character was criticized.

Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly (Japanese original title: 零 〜 紅 い 蝶 〜 [ zero - akai chō - , Zero - red butterfly - ]; sold in the US as Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly ) is a Japanese survival horror video game by Tecmo from 2003, which was released in Germany on April 27, 2004 for PlayStation 2 , on January 27, 2005 for Xbox and on June 29, 2012 for Wii . The game comes from the developers of the predecessor.

action

Since an idyllic place where the twin sisters Mio and Mayu used to play is to be flooded due to a newly built dam, the two twin sisters go to that place to remember the old days. When Mayu sees a bright red butterfly on this excursion and runs after him, Mio decides to follow her sister before she loses sight of Mayu. In doing so, Mio crosses an invisible, magical border that is drawn by a protective stone in the earth and suddenly finds himself in exactly the same forest, which is now in the shadow of the night and eerie darkness. As Mio walks on, she discovers Mayu at a place on a hill, from which the two can see a seemingly deserted village, which is also known as the village of the gods (in English: The Lost Village). Unfortunately, the magical protective stones that are set up all over the village and around prevent them from leaving the area. Since it seems to be the only way, the twins walk along a path that leads from the hill directly into the small village, which after a short time turns out to be haunted by ghosts. From now on, the two try to find a way out of the village and discover that their appearance in this mysterious place may not have been a coincidence.

characters

  • Mio Amakura : Mio is the younger of the two twin sisters and the main controllable character in Project Zero II. It can be assumed that she is a reincarnation of the runaway Yae Kurosawa, as she is mistaken for her by many spirits in the village of the gods.
  • Mayu Amakura : She is the older, more reserved sister of Mio. She has psychic abilities and perceives visions. Mayu is the reincarnation of the retarded Sae Kurosawa and is attracted by purple butterflies.
  • Misao Amakura : He was the father of Mio and Mayu. He is a descendant of Dr. Kunihiko Asou and disappeared near a precipice near the village of the gods. After marrying Mio and Mayu's mother, he had taken her name Amakura.
  • Shizuka Amakura : After the death of her husband Misao, she moved away with her daughters. She told Mio and Mayu that their father had left them.
  • Yae Kurosawa : Yae is the older of the Kurosawa twins. She and Sae wanted to flee the ritual with Itsuki's help. But Sae fell and injured himself. Yae left her behind. She later returned to the village, but it was gone. She was found by Ryouzou Munakata, who later married her. She is the great grandmother of Miku and Mafuyu Hinasaki (Project Zero I).
  • Sae Kurosawa : Sae is Yae's younger sister and only ran away to be with her sister. After being injured, villagers found her and brought her back to the village. There she learned of Itsuki's suicide, who hanged himself in his cell. She agreed to have the ritual performed alone and was also hanged and thrown into the abyss of hell. But that didn't calm the gods. Now Sae's ghost roams the village and waits for her sister, on whom she wants to take revenge, because she blames Yae for Itsuki's death and the failed ritual.
  • Ryokan Kurosawa : Yae and Sae's father killed his twin brother in the purple ritual years earlier. After the failed Itsuki and Mutsuki ritual, he prepared the ritual for his own daughters. He took Dr. Makabe caught to create the kusabi. After Yae could no longer be found, he decided to hang Sae and throw him into the abyss of Hell.
  • Itsuki Tachibana : He is the younger of the Tachibana twins. After the failed ritual with his brother Mutsuki, his hair turned white (probably from the shock, as Ryokan Kurosawa's hair is also white). He wanted to help the Kurosawa twins escape with his friend Munakata Ryouzou, but was discovered. He was then imprisoned in the department store, where he hanged himself while repenting.
  • Mutsuki Tachibana : Itsuki's older brother did not become a butterfly after the purple ritual. It is believed that his love for Itsuki made him defend himself too much.
  • Chitose Tachibana : She is the little sister of Itsuki and Mutsuki. Chitose also blames Yae for Itsuki's death and therefore attacks Mio, who she thinks is Yae. She is almost blind and very shy of people, which is why she hides in closets. So she couldn't give Munakata the key either. She died in a closet while repenting.
  • Akane Kiryu : She is the younger of the Kiryu twins and already killed her sister a few years earlier in the purple ritual. She could never get over the grief for her sister Azami and so her father gave her a doll that looked just like Azami. But the doll was haunted by an evil spirit. During the repentance, the doll went completely crazy and strangled Akane.
  • Azami Kiryu : Akane's older sister died years ago during the purple ritual. Her father made her sister a doll that looked exactly like her. But the doll was haunted by an evil spirit. The doll along with Akane killed her father. Azami's good spirit came to her father's aid - too late.
  • Yoshitatsu Kiryu : Akane and Azami's father was a gifted doll maker. So he built a doll for his bereaved daughter Akane that was exactly the same as Azami. However, the doll was obsessed and strangled her father to death with Akane.
  • Dr. Seijiro Makabe : A folklorist who was interested in rituals. He traveled to the village of the gods with his assistant Munakata Ryouzou to research the purple ritual. There he was captured and thrown alive into the abyss of hell in the cutting ritual. He returned with Sae's ghost.
  • Munakata Ryouzou : He was the assistant to Dr. Makabe and lived near the village. Munakata was a good friend of Itsuki and Mutsuki and was supposed to help the Kurosawa twins escape. When he came to the village one day, he was told that Itsuki and Mutsuki had died of illness. On the day of the ritual, he went to fetch Yae and Sae, but found only the confused Yae; the village was gone. He married Yae and continued to study rituals. He died in the Himuro mansion. He is the great-grandfather of Miku and Mafuyu Hinasaki (Project Zero I).
  • Dr. Kunihiko Asou : He is the inventor of the Obskura camera and the ghost radio. Dr. Makabe borrowed the Obscura camera from him for research purposes and he is an ancestor of Mio and Mayu.
  • Masumi Makimura : The surveyor came to the village of the gods to take measurements for the construction of the dam. He and his girlfriend were looking for a way out of the village. He was killed by the Kusabi in the Kurosawa house and then moved to the Osaka house where his girlfriend was waiting for him.
  • Miyako Sudo : Masumi's girlfriend. She looked for her boyfriend in the village. After days of searching, she herself got visions from the past. Masumi's ghost eventually strangled her.

Special features and gameplay

  • Again, the obscure camera is used to fight wandering ghosts. The camera can be changed and improved with various functions and lenses.
  • Good spirits help the player in solving puzzles and opening doors.
  • Saving is only possible to a limited extent on illuminated lanterns. You cannot save on a lantern during an apparition or a fight.
  • There are three different difficulty levels for the PlayStation 2 version of the game. Easy and Normal are available immediately, with Hard mode added after completing the game.
  • In addition to the camera obskura, a flashlight and a map are also available to help you find your way around the village of the gods.
  • Available films for the Obskura camera are Type 07, Type 14, Type 61, Type 90 and the high performance Type Zero film. The player has an unlimited number of the weak Type 07 movie.
  • In mission mode, the player can compete on 26 different tasks.
  • After playing the game for the first time, the mission mode and new costumes can be unlocked. The player also gets the opportunity to complete a ghost list in order to unlock new options.

Director's Cut Version (Xbox)

The Director's Cut version for the Xbox contains a few more features than the normal version:

  • Nightmare game mode with an alternate ending (Promise Ending)
  • The survival mode in which the player has to reach the Hell's Abyss with a limited number of healing options.
  • New unlockable costumes

Wii Edition (Nintendo Wii)

On June 29, 2012, a new version was released for the Nintendo Wii. In addition to all the endings in the Playstation 2 and XBOX Directors-Cut version, this also includes 2 new endings, a new, improved graphic that was also used in Project Zero 4. In contrast to the Playstation 2 and XBOX version, in this version the characters are only shown as adults and larger. A new ending song was used. And the characters all got a new voice in the western versions. In addition to the story mode, the Wii edition offers us the so-called haunted house. This mode is best described as a virtual ghost train, because our character - here we are really playing ourselves - walks along a predetermined path as if on rails, while we can only look to the side. The game tries to scare you in different ways.

action

Rei Kurosawa is a 23 year old freelance photographer. Some time ago she lost her fiancé in a car accident and she drove the vehicle. She feels guilty and can't stop thinking about it and keeps wondering why she of all survived.

Her next assignment is a series of photos about an old Japanese villa in the mountains that is far from civilization and is said to be haunted. While she is taking her photos in the hallways of the villa, she sees an unreal apparition of her late fiancé Yuu Asou. She wonders what that was and follows the person to find out if Yuu might still be alive after all. She turns the corner in a dark corridor and unexpectedly finds herself in a different environment where it is snowing. She penetrates deeper into the property there and is suddenly attacked by an evil spirit that she tries to photograph. But he snatches all of her life energy from her, and she collapses unconscious.

She wakes up in her bed bathed in sweat at home and realizes that it was all just a bad dream. Suddenly she feels a stabbing pain in her shoulder and you can see a creepy-looking tattoo appear on her back out of nowhere. Rei now has to investigate what this dream is all about and why this curse weighs on her.

characters

  • Rei Kurosawa: Rei is a freelance photographer and is 23 years old. When she was asked to examine an old house, she met Yuu. She captured this encounter in a photo. Since then, every night in her dreams she has gone to the house of sleep , to which she has followed Yuu.
  • Kei Amakura: A writer dealing with history and legends. In his dreams he too is called to the house of sleep . He can support Rei with important information and move heavy objects to get to places that are inaccessible to Rei. He is the uncle of Mayu and Mio Amakura (Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly).
  • Miku Hinasaki: Reis’s assistant and main character in Project Zero , who lives in Reis’s house and who also helps her with important information. She, too, gets lost in her dreams in the House of Sleep to find out what the visions of her deceased brother mean. Through her strong spirit powers she can awaken the abilities of the camera obscura that only she can use to fight ghosts more effectively.
  • Yuu Asou: Is Rei Kurosawa's partner and has worked with Kei Amakura for a long time. He was Mafuyu Hinasaki's best friend, and he was deeply saddened by the disappearance of him. Yuu Asou died in a car accident caused by Rei.
  • Yoshino Takigawa: She is the only survivor of a plane crash. She too is trapped in the house of sleep. She is surrounded by black shadows who are her friend and family members. They perished in the crash. Yoshino is insulted by them and is very upset about it. You can hear her crying around the house and saying that she did not choose to survive. After she has drifted away, her ghost appears frequently in Reis' apartment.
  • Reika Kuze: Reika lived in a village and was in love with Kaname Kuze. When Kaname was out of the village, a massacre took place there and Reika's family were murdered. Since then she has lived in the Kuze's house and was raised by Yashuu. This made Reika become a shrine maiden and get tattooed in order to take on the suffering of others. To complete the ritual, she was "put to sleep". But Kaname entered the Chamber of Thorns and was murdered in front of Reika's eyes. This triggered excruciating pain in Reika and the ritual failed. The gap opened and since then Reika has been roaming the house and pulling everything into the darkness.
  • Kaname Kuze: He is the son of Akito and Kyouka Kuze. At the age of four he was banished from the Kuze house. Before that, his mother gave him an earring, which he then gave to Reika. With Amane's help, he was able to get into the Chamber of Thorns to see Reika again. However, there he was murdered.
  • Yashuu Kuze: She is the head of the Kuze family and the owner of the house. She is also Kyouka's mother and Kanames and Amane's grandmother. She made Reika a tattooed priestess and killed Kamane in the thorn chamber.
  • Amane Kuze: She is one of the four handmaiden and represents the south. Amane is the only Kuze born and helped Kamane into the house and Reika. But since men are forbidden in the Kuze house, he was killed and Amane was impaled and killed by the other three handmaiden. Her mind asks Miku for help.
  • Minamo Kuze: Minamo was adopted to serve Reika. She represents the West and has short hair with two clips.
  • Shigure Kuze: She was adopted too and has her long hair tied up. She represents the east.
  • Hisame Kuze: Hisame is also an adopted handmaiden. She serves Reika and represents the north.
  • Kyouka Kuze: Kyouka is proud of her long hair. She once fell in love with Akito and became pregnant by him. Akito was allowed to stay indoors so that a female offspring could be raised. But Kyouka had a boy whom she named Kaname. Akito wanted to flee with the pregnant Kyouka even then, but he disappeared. Kyouka was only allowed to raise Kaname until he was four years old, after which he was expelled from the house. Kyouka gave him one earring and kept the second so they would always be in touch. Since then, her spirit has been waiting for Akito's return.
  • Asanuma Kiriko: Your family was killed by burglars. Only she survived because she followed her mother's instructions and hid in a closet. After days in the closet, she was found and taken to a hospital. She got lost in the house of sleep and haunted away. Her ghost crawls around and often attacks Miku.
  • Tengai Narumi: The leader of the four masters who built the house. Only he was allowed to survive in order to pass the blueprints on to the next generation.
  • Shigeomi Moriya , Nirei Moriya , Tatsumi Moriya and Inui Moriya : The four masters who built the Kuze House. After the house was completed, they killed their workers and then sacrificed themselves.
  • Makie Kuzuhara and Kozue Kuzuhar : Mother and daughter are looking for the man. Kozue knows it is her fault that her husband disappeared.
  • Tsuzuri and Musubi Osaka : The two are shrine twins and probably underwent the purple ritual before the story of Project Zero II. They leave kei keys.

Special features and gameplay

  • Project Zero 3 is the continuation of the first two survival horror games in this series, which also works without weapons and only uses the camera Obscura to defeat opponents. Depiction of violence is only present in the form of a few subtle horror interludes to increase the game's dark atmosphere.
  • Against the ghosts of wandering souls that cannot find rest are to be fought. What is new in the series is that as a player with more than one character you can follow the plot, who also have different skills and therefore show the player various possible solutions to the stories and demand strategic thinking. The camera Obskura, which can be upgraded with bonus functions and optimized to ward off ghosts through stronger attacks, helps in turn.
  • Furthermore, a flashlight and a map of the house are again available, on which you can determine your position in order to find your way around the inhospitable surroundings of the old villa. Also it comes in Project Zero 3 to solving puzzles to be able to promote the history and get to your destination.
  • The game has a selection for different levels of difficulty, including when you first start the game Easy and Normal . After playing through the game, advanced players have another level of difficulty in the form of hard .
  • Storage options are again very limited and only possible in certain places. The advantage here is that the stock of the inferior type 07 film is refreshed to 99 images with each new dream and is thus available almost indefinitely.
  • There are different types of films, Type 07, Type 14, Type 61, Type 90 and the powerful Type 00 (English: Type Zero) that can be inserted into the camera obscura , which affects the strength of the attacks and the ghost power withdrawn affects the ghost being photographed. Furthermore, new lenses can be found that can be attached to the camera obscura to enable different types of attack and thus draw more spiritual energy from the spirits. This means that more ghost points can be deducted from the ghosts, which are needed to upgrade the camera.
  • After the first playthrough, the player has the option to buy new costumes and accessories.
  • The player also receives a ghost list to complete and a mission mode.

action

Ten years before the story in Project Zero 4, five girls were kidnapped and taken to an island in southern Honshu . A detective named Choushiro Kirishima freed them. Two of the girls later died under mysterious circumstances. The three other girls, Ruka Minazuki, Misaki Asou and Madoka Tsukimori (all 17 years old in the story) later return to the island to regain their lost memories. At the request of Ruka's mother, Choushiro goes to the island again to find the three girls.

characters

  • Ruka Minazuki: As a little girl, she and four other girls were kidnapped and taken to an island called Rougetsu Island . They were soon rescued and brought home by a detective. Later two of the girls died and the other two returned to the island. Ruka also returns to the island to get back her lost memories.
  • Misaki Asou: She was also one of the five kidnapped girls on Rougetsu Island. She later returned to the island with Madoka in search of a mysterious woman in black to keep her memories. She is a distant relative of Mio and Mayu Amakura (Project Zero II).
  • Madoka Tsukimori: She was also kidnapped and later returned to the island with Misaki. She is very reserved and allowed herself to be ordered around a lot by Misaki, until she disappeared and Madoka is now on her own.
  • Choushiro Kirishima: He's the detective who brought the five girls back from Rougetsu Island. Now, at the request of Ruka's mother, he has returned to the island to bring the three girls back.
  • Tomoe Nanamura: One of the five kidnapped girls from Rougetsu Island. Before the actual story of Project Zero 4, she was found murdered in the hospital. The rigor mortis shows that she fearfully held her hands over her face.
  • Marie Shinomiya: Also kidnapped girl. She, too, was found dead in her house before the story. Her dead body looked exactly the same as Tomoe's.
  • Miya: The mysterious woman in black from Misaki's memories. She called Misaki back to Rougetsu Island.
  • Sayaka Minazuki: Ruka's mother. She asks Choushiro Kirishima to bring her daughter back from Rougetsu Island again.
  • Dr. Kunihiko Asou: He is the inventor of the Obskura camera and the ghost radio. A museum on Rougetsu Island was dedicated to him. He is an ancestor of Misaki. He died in unexplained circumstances in early 1900.

Gameplay

As in the previous parts of the Project Zero series, the player fights against ghosts with the camera obscura. The player uses the Wii Remote and the nunchuk to position the camera and flash in the correct position. As in the previous versions, not all ghosts are hostile to him. For example, good spirits help to solve puzzles or open doors.

As is typical of the genre, the focus of the fourth part is once again on an oppressive atmosphere and foregoing an excessive amount of action in its favor.
