Living Luppe project

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lebendige Luppe project is a revitalization measure in the floodplain landscape of Leipzig and Schkeuditz . The aim is to restore the former river beds in the Elster-Luppe-Aue. Two new rivers are to be created that will bring more water back to the alluvial forest . Joint project partners are the cities of Leipzig and Schkeuditz, NABU Saxony, the University of Leipzig and the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research - UFZ .

activities

The partners are working on the implementation of the project idea in two project areas. To the south of the Neue Luppe, various existing stretches of flowing water (Luppe-Altlaufen, Luppewildbett) are to be used and connected to a new body of water approx. 16 kilometers in length. North of the Neue Luppe, the watering of the Papitz clay puddles - an important amphibian habitat in the Leipzig and Schkeuditz floodplains - was renewed in 2015/16.

The idea of the project is based on preliminary work from the Green Ring Leipzig and the NABU Regional Association Leipzig. 2012 saw the go-ahead for implementation with funding from the federal program for biological diversity . The cities of Leipzig and Schkeuditz as well as NABU Saxony are responsible for implementing the watercourses. Further project components are public and environmental education work, which is also carried out by NABU Saxony, as well as accompanying research in the natural and social sciences. The Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research - UFZ and the University of Leipzig are investigating the effects of river revitalization using long-term monitoring. The aim is to counteract the water shortage in the alluvial forest and to give the floodplain new and important lifelines. In addition to the revitalization of old watercourses, one of the main focuses of the project is to focus on the importance of the floodplain for people and nature. The ecosystem services that an intact floodplain provides, such as the binding of carbon dioxide or the provision of spaces for recreation and leisure activities, increase the quality of life of the urban population.

history

Interventions such as river regulation measures, extensive embankments and the drainage of arable and meadow areas have caused serious changes in the floodplain landscape of Leipzig and Schkeuditz. The construction of the Neue Luppe river in the 1930s is particularly significant : former rivers have been cut and can no longer supply the alluvial forest with the vital water. Due to the sustainable drainage, the formerly water-rich floodplain landscape suffers from a massive drainage of groundwater and dries up. Habitats are being lost, the biodiversity of the alluvial forest is threatened.

In May 2018, the project was recognized as an official project of the UN Decade of Biological Diversity .

Funding and Financing

The Lebendige Luppe is the first Saxon project to receive funding under the federal program for biological diversity . The program is being implemented by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation with funds from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety . The project is also funded by the nature conservation fund of the Saxon State Foundation for Nature and Environment . All project partners also contribute their own shares to the financing. The Lebendige Luppe is a key project of the Green Ring Leipzig and NABU Leipzig.
