history
The company was founded in 1978 under the name "Biotec" in Madison , Wisconsin as a restriction enzyme provider by Bill Linton. In 1983 the name was changed to Promega Biotec and finally to Promega in 1987. According to its own information, the company currently offers more than 3,000 products for the life science sector. It is headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, USA and has 16 sales offices and more than 50 distributors worldwide. The average age of the 1,500 employees is 30 years (as of 2018).

Cellular analysis and drug development
Promega has been developing products based on bioluminescence technology since 1990. The areas of application for the detection of bioluminescence are reporter gene assays, cell viability, apoptosis, cytochrome P450, kinases, proteases and RNA interference. The current triplex analysis system uses bioluminescence and fluorescence to detect cell viability, cytotoxicity and apoptosis in one approach.
Integrated platforms
The bioluminescence assays, DNA and RNA purification products and HaloTag technologies can be integrated into automated high-throughput systems from other companies. The GloMax luminometers have pre-installed protocols that can be used to perform multiplex bioluminescence assays. The luminometers with injection system can be used with dual reporter assays such as the dual luciferase assay. The company sells its own Maxwell 16 system, a laptop-sized automated nucleic acid purification system for diagnostic laboratories and low-throughput research.
