Protector Shoal (shoal, shoal) is an undersea volcano ( seamount ) in the archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic . It is located 56 km northwest of the volcanic island of Zavodovski Island and is the northernmost of a whole series of volcanoes that stretch on the Scotia Ridge in an arc from South Georgia to Antarctica . It rises around 1200 m from the bottom of the ocean to just 55 m below the sea surface and can - with the rough seas that are common in this region - pose a danger to shipping.
The volcano is named after the HMS Protector , an ice patrol ship of the British Royal Navy , which sighted a large pumice raft in March 1962 , which came from the only previously recorded eruption of this volcano. Protector Shoal was the only volcano in the South Sandwich Islands to emit rhyolite pumice ; some of the ejecta drifted on the sea surface as far as New Zealand .
