Mikkeli (province)

The province of Mikkeli ( Finnish Mikkelin lääni , Swedish S: t Michels län ) is a former province in Finland . It existed until 1997 and had Mikkeli as its capital. The province of Mikkeli was largely congruent with today's landscape Savo , next they included the today Päijät-Häme associated municipalities Hartola , Heinola and Sysmä and the community Kangaslampi , through their incorporation in Varkaus 2005. Savo arrived.

Mikkeli Province was founded in 1831. In 1847, Mikkeli was designated as its capital; Heinola had previously held this position. In 1960 part of the Mikkeli Province was added to the newly established Central Finland Province . Through the provincial reform of 1997, the province of Mikkeli (excluding the municipalities of Hartola, Heinola and Sysmä) was merged with the provinces of Kuopio and North Karelia to form the new province of Eastern Finland .
