history

At the end of the 19th century, the lands of today's Prudentópolis belonged to Dr. Cândido Ferreira de Abreu, who promoted their settlement. In 1896, 1,500 Ukrainian families, a total of 8,000 settlers, were attracted to the settlement . The settlers were settled in different villages where they lived as small farmers, ranchers and artisans. The municipality ( município ) was incorporated in 1906 and was named Prudentópolis in honor of President Prudente de Morais (President of Brazil from 1894 to 1898). The immigration of Ukrainians to Prudentópolis continued until the mid-1920s. Today Prudentópolis is considered the most important Ukrainian settlement in Brazil, more than 80% of the population come from Ukrainians.
