Prudentópolis is a city (officially: Município de Prudentópolis ) in the Brazilian state of Paraná . According to the 2010 census, it has around 48,800 inhabitants, who are called Prudentopolitans ( Portuguese prudentopolitano ).
geography
Prudentópolis is located in the southern Brazilian state of Paraná on the BR-373 national road leading to Paraguay (with a connection to the BR-277 in the south of the municipality) about 200 km west of Curitiba , the capital of Paraná. It is located in the Sudeste Paranaense mesoregion .
The area is hilly; there are dozens of waterfalls in it .
history
At the end of the 19th century, the lands of today's Prudentópolis belonged to Dr. Cândido Ferreira de Abreu, who promoted their settlement. In 1896, 1,500 Ukrainian families, a total of 8,000 settlers, were attracted to the settlement . The settlers were settled in different villages where they lived as small farmers, ranchers and artisans. The municipality ( município ) was incorporated in 1906 and was named Prudentópolis in honor of President Prudente de Morais (President of Brazil from 1894 to 1898). The immigration of Ukrainians to Prudentópolis continued until the mid-1920s. Today Prudentópolis is considered the most important Ukrainian settlement in Brazil, more than 80% of the population come from Ukrainians.
Gilvan Pizzano Agibert ( PPS ) has been the city prefect since 2009 .
Attractions
Prudentópolis is mainly characterized by the nature that surrounds it. There are more than 100 recorded waterfalls in the municipality, several of them more than a hundred meters high. The highest is the Salto São Francisco at 196 meters. The importance of tourism in the city and the importance of the city within tourism in Paraná is steadily increasing. The people of Ukrainian descent uphold many customs unusual in Brazil, including the Vesselka folk dance group , and hold typical Ukrainian festivals such as the Ukrainian Night ( Noite Ucraniana ) and the Koziá Festyvalh ( Kid Festival ).
