The false raccoon shark ( Pseudotriakis microdon ), also called false dogfish , is a species of the family Pseudotriakidae and belongs to the order of the ground sharks (Carcharhiniformes). It is a slender, dark brown shark and is a maximum of 2.69 (males) to 2.95 meters (females) long. The lower lobe of the caudal fin is only slightly developed.
distribution
The fish live worldwide over the continental shelf at depths of 200 to 1500 meters. There is evidence among other things
- from the Atlantic off New Jersey , Cuba , Brazil , Iceland , France , Madeira , the Azores , Senegal and Cape Verde .
- In the Pacific it was found near Japan , Taiwan , New Zealand and Hawaii .
- In the Indian Ocean u. a. at the Aldabra Group and off the coast of Western Australia.
Reproduction
False raccoon sharks are viviparous ( ovoviviparous ). Two or four young are born per litter.
food
False raccoon sharks feed on bony fish , other small sharks, rays, and invertebrates .
