Pseudotrichonotus ( Gr .: “Pseudes” = false, “thirx” = hair, “noton” = back) is a species of fish from the order of the lizard fish relatives(Aulopiformes),comprising only four species. The four very similar marine fish occur widely separated from each other, one species around the Japanese Izu Peninsula in the northwestern Pacific, another near the Saya de Malha Bank northeast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean , the third in Indonesian waters and the fourth near Shark Bayn der Coast of Western Australia.

The two marine fish are 6 to 9 cm long and have an elongated, cylinder-like body and a pointed snout with a small mouth. The dorsal fin is supported by 33 soft rays, the anal fin by 13 to 15 fin rays. The number of vortices is 48 to 50, that of the Branchiostegal rays is six.
