The Aargau Psychiatric Services AG ( PDAG ) are a public institution of the Canton of Aargau for the treatment of people of all age groups who are affected by a mental illness . The PDAG guarantee psychiatric treatment and care with emergency services and crisis intervention for the canton's population.

On behalf of the canton, the PDAG treat mental illnesses and train doctors and nurses as an academic teaching hospital at the University of Zurich . PDAG has been a stock corporation owned by the Canton of Aargau since 2004 . In addition, the Psychiatric Services Aargau AG (PDAG) conduct medical and nursing research. Overall, the PDAG employs over 1,300 people in over 50 professions.

Establishment and further development of the Königsfelden sanatorium and nursing home

In 1803 the canton of Aargau ran a cantonal poor, sick, mad and midwifery institution in the monastery buildings. Königsfelden was a canton hospital from 1803 to 1887. On January 21, 1868, construction work began on the Königsfelden sanatorium. On October 1st, 1872, the canton of Aargau opened a psychiatric sanatorium and nursing home in the former cantonal hospital on the monastery grounds of Königsfelden. The sanatorium and nursing home provided accommodation for 250 patients. The number of patients increased steadily, so in 1895 a cell compartment was added on both sides of the main building. Up to 1000 patients were accommodated in Königsfelden during the First World War . In 1929 the first diploma exams could be passed. In 1933 the public consultation hours for mentally ill children began in the Königsfelden sanatorium.

The sanatorium and nursing home in Königsfelden was called the "Psychiatric Clinic Königsfelden" from 1965. The child and adolescent psychiatric services were led by Dr. Grollimund-Kostron was founded in 1974 and the consultancy and liaison psychiatry at the children's clinic of the Cantonal Hospital in Aarau were also founded. The outpatient clinic in Baden was opened in 1977 and the outpatient clinic in Wohlen and Rheinfelden was opened four years later. In 1993, a drug rehab center was set up in Königsfelden, the first of its kind in the canton of Aargau.

Formation of the Aargau Psychiatric Services

In 1995, the inpatient and outpatient services in adult psychiatry were separated with the introduction of new names: Psychiatric Services Aargau, Internal Psychiatric Service and External Psychiatric Service. This year, too, the child and adolescent psychiatric services were integrated into the psychiatric service of the Canton of Aargau. The opening of the EPD base in Aarau also took place in 1995. One year later, the EPD bases in Frick and Wohlen and the Sternbild residential and employment home opened for mentally disabled people . The opening of the heroin dispensing point in the staff house took place in 2000. In 2004 PDAG became a stock corporation with a board of directors and CEO . The opening of the Memory Clinic Windisch followed a year later. The meeting center opened in 2006. The PDAG opened the psychiatry museum called Geschichte with a vernissage in 2009. The Königsfelden Psychiatric Clinic operates a forensic station for offenders with inpatient therapy in 2010.

The Aargau Psychiatric Services as a modern company

As one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Switzerland, the Psychiatric Services Aargau AG (PDAG) is also involved in the training of prospective doctors. The PDAG has been recognized as a teaching hospital of the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich since 2011. The head and chief physician of the clinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy, Wolfram Kawohl, is at the same time titular professor for psychiatry and psychotherapy at the University of Zurich. In 2012 the opening of the second Memory Clinic in Aarau, the second forensic station and the forensic outpatient clinic and the new day clinic for children and adolescents in Königsfelden took place. The opening of the crisis intervention and triage center followed in 2013. The opening of the neuropsychiatric consultation service in Aarau and the opening of the center for stationary forensic therapy were in 2014. The opening of the clinic for children and adolescents with the integration of the children's and youth ward Rüfenach followed 2016.

The inpatient psychiatry and psychotherapy center is responsible for the inpatient treatment of adults up to the age of 65. The most common mental illnesses are mood disorders such as depression and schizophrenia . As part of inpatient basic care and acute treatment, there are various special offers, such as B. inpatient psychotherapy , mother-child hospitalizations and rehabilitation .

During the consultation hours, specialists carry out outpatient investigations if psychotic disorders are suspected . The patients are treated on an outpatient basis by psychiatrists , psychologists , nurses and social workers. Treatments are based on discussions, supported by medication if necessary.

The clinic for consultant, geriatric and neuropsychiatry is responsible for the inpatient, outpatient and consultative care of the Aargau population. Seniors with mental illnesses and people with cognitive impairments are treated and cared for here.

Forensic psychiatry

The Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry is a branch of psychiatry that deals with the assessment, treatment and placement of mentally ill offenders and in which scientific and clinical findings are applied to legal issues. It includes psychiatric research, clinical practice and teaching in the context of criminal law , the execution of sentences and measures , civil law and insurance law . In a narrower sense, forensic psychiatry deals with questions raised by courts and authorities in the field of psychiatry.

Child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy deals with the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders and illnesses that occur in childhood or puberty . Today child and adolescent psychiatry is an independent subject, but originally developed out of psychiatry.
