Puccinia abrupta is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the sunflower genus Viguiera . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is common in South and Central America .

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia abrupta can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia abrupta grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Their spermogonia and aecia are unknown. The uredia of the fungus growing on both sides or predominantly on top of the host leaves and stems are dark cinnamon brown. Their chestnut to cinnamon brown uredospores are 20-25 × 18-22 µm in size, egg-shaped to slightly urn-shaped and spiky. The parts of the species growing on both sides or on stems are black-brown, powdery and uncovered. The chestnut-brown teliospores are two-celled, usually broadly ellipsoidal and 35–44 × 26–31 µm in size. Their stem is colorless and up to 130 µm long.

distribution

The known distribution area of Puccinia abrupta extends from South America to Arizona .

ecology

The host plants of Puccinia abrupta are Viguiera dentata , V. sylvatica and V. tenuis . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a development cycle of which only Telien and Uredien and their host are known so far; Spermogonia and Aecien could not be assigned to her.

meaning

Puccinia abrupta is also used for biological pest control of the invasive daisy family Parthenium hysterophorus in Australia and South Africa.
