Puccinia affinis is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is a endoparasite the Korbblütlergattung Verbesina . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is common in Central America .
features
Macroscopic features
Puccinia affinis can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds emerging on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.
Microscopic features
The mycelium of Puccinia affinis grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Their spermogonia and aecia are unknown. The uredia of the fungus that grow on the top of the leaves are cinnamon brown. Their cinnamon to golden brown uredospores are 24–29 × 19–24 µm in size, mostly ovate to long ovoid and spiky. The parts of the species growing on the top of the leaves are black-brown and powdery. The dark maroon teliospores are two-celled, usually broadly ellipsoid and 37–48 × 29–35 µm in size. Their stem is colorless and up to 130 µm long.
distribution
The known distribution area of Puccinia affinis extends from Guatemala to central Mexico .
ecology
The host plants of Puccinia affinis are different Verbesina species. The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a development cycle of which only Telien and Uredien and their host are known so far; Spermogonia and Aecien could not be assigned to her.
