Puccinia Aristidae is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the European solstice and of the sweet grass genus Aristida . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is common in the southern Palearctic .

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia aristidae can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds emerging on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia Aristidae grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. The cylindrical aecia of the species have 18–21 × 15–18  µm large, hyaline aeciospores with a warty surface. The cinnamon-brown uredia of the mushroom grow in lines on the top of the host leaves. Their golden brown uredospores are 25–33 × 18–23 µm in size, broadly ellipsoidal to ellipsoidal and warty. The parts of the species that grow on both sides or predominantly on the upper side of the leaves are blackish, powdery and open early. They grow in rows and often flow together in up to 5 mm long lines. The light chestnut-brown teliospores are two-celled, elongated to broadly ellipsoid and 40–58 × 20–27 µm in size. Their stem is colorless and up to 175 µm long.

Species delimitation

Puccinia subnitens is very similar , especially its uredospores, which some authors regard as a synonym for Puccinia aristidae . However, Cummins sees him as a separate species.

distribution

While the known distribution area of Puccinia aristidae var. Aristidae extends from Afghanistan to North Africa , Puccinia aristidae var. Chaetariae is distributed in North and South America, India and Africa.

ecology

The host plants of Puccinia aristidae are for the haplonts European solstices ( Heliotropium europaeum ) and representatives of the foxtail family and wonder flower family as well as various Aristida species for the dikaryote . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species has a development cycle with Telien, Uredien, Aecien and Spermogonia and changes host. Puccinia aristidae is also described in the literature as a pathogen on spinach and beet , but no distinction is made between Puccinia aristidae and Puccinia subnitens .
