The pump has a large event hall, conference , group and work rooms, as well as workshops and catering areas. Concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, theater productions, readings, poetry slams, public discussions and other events are regularly held in the pump, all of which are included in the program primarily for content and not for commercial reasons . The Kommunale Kino Kiel has been located in the pump since 1979 and offers a non-commercial, alternative cinema program. Over 750 cinema and over 200 concert events take place in the pump every year, as well as over 850 meetings of various working groups and other regular users. Overall, the pump can record an annual flow of over 100,000 people. The Kieler Stammtisch of the Pirate Party Schleswig-Holstein also takes place weekly in the pump.

history

Pumping station

The pump was originally a pumping station for the disposal of the Kiel sewage in the Kiel Fjord . The pumping station was built in 1929 in the center of Kiel's old town . In 1974, however, the pumping station was rebuilt elsewhere in Kiel, so that the pump had become inoperative. Therefore the city of Kiel decided to convert the former pumping station into a culture and communication center.

Event center

In the course of the renovation, two upper floors were moved into the spacious hall of the pumping station. The completion and inauguration of the pump took place in 1979. Work, event, cinema , gastronomy , disco , bar and office space were created on the more than 2,000 m² of floor space .

Inside the listed building, parts of the technical systems of the pumping station are still present, such as a large pump wheel on the ground floor, which can even turn for decorative purposes.

Association "Pump eV"

This "new" pump was handed over to the association of the same name in May 1979 as a culture and communication center. The state capital Kiel is still the owner of the property , the Verein Pump eV is the operator of the pump. The pump is therefore not a municipal facility. In the usage contract between the city of Kiel and the association, in addition to the amount of the financial contributions from the city, the association's cultural tasks and assignments are specified. Within this contract, however, the association is independent of all political and administrative levels of the municipality.

Finances

The financial resources of the pump are always problematic. The last attempt in 2002 was the then municipal department head for waste management and culture to close the pump. In the end, however, they agreed on a settlement that provided for a drastic cut in funding for the pump.

Promotion of young talent

The pump is committed to promoting young talent, especially in the fields of film and music. The pump is one of the few places in Kiel where young bands , young musicians and young DJs can regularly practice their music and present it to a larger audience under professional conditions. The municipal cinema (together with the film workshop of the Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein ) also offers young filmmakers from the region the opportunity to show their work on the screen.
