The "Domenico Cimarosa" pumped storage power plant operated by the energy supplier Enel , also known as the Presenzano pumped storage power plant , is located near the Italian municipality of Presenzano in the province of Caserta in the Campania region , on the Volturno River . It was named after the Italian composer Domenico Cimarosa (1749–1801).

The four reversible pump turbines of the power plant have an output of 1000 MW in turbine operation and an output of 1029 MW in pump operation. The upper basin ( bacino di Cesima ) and the lower basin ( bacino di Presenzano ) each have a volume of approximately six million cubic meters. The nominal water level of the upper basin is 643  m slm , that of the lower basin is 156.05  m slm. The lower basin has an area of 750,000 m² and a depth of up to 23 m. There is a fall of 495.5 m between the upper and lower basins. The water flows between these two basins first through an approximately 2.3 km long pressure tunnel and then via an inclined pressure pipe with a flow rate of 250.56 m³ / s. In the vicinity of the junction of penstocks for pressure pipe is a moated castle . In order to compensate for water losses through leaks and evaporation, the power plant is additionally supplied with water from the Rio S. Bartolomeo, a tributary of the Volturno.

Construction began in 1979 and commissioning was in 1991. The pumped storage power plant cost one trillion lire , which corresponds to around half a billion euros.
