The Riedl pumped storage power plant (also known as Riedl energy storage ) is a shaft power plant that the Donaukraftwerk Jochenstein AG is planning as the project sponsor near the village of Riedl in the municipality of Untergriesbach ( Passau district ). As of December 31, 2016, half of the share capital in the project management company was held by Verbund AG and Innwerk AG , Stammham, a 100% subsidiary of Verbund AG.

The first considerations for building a pumped storage power plant were made in the 1970s.
According to the plans, an upper reservoir with 4.23 million cubic meters of water is to be built in a depression between the villages of Riedl and Gottsdorf , which will serve as an energy store. The water comes from the nearby Danube and is pumped up the mountain when electricity consumption is low. When the energy demand is high, it is drained and electricity is generated again. Both the lines and the power station should be underground. Construction should start in 2015 [obsolete] , completion in 2018 [obsolete] . With a cost of 350 million euros and a construction period of four years, it would currently be the largest private construction project in Eastern Bavaria . The dam would be 20 m high and the lake area would be 24 hectares. The output should be 300 megawatts, with a drop height of 340 m.
The project is politically controversial: Proponents point to the need to expand the storage capacity for electricity, for which pumped storage power plants alone are a proven technology on a large scale, even if alternative approaches to energy storage are also to be pursued. The opinion-forming process does not seem to have been completed by all parties yet. The opponents of the Riedl pumped storage power plant fear ecological disadvantages and a strengthening of the nuclear economy through the pumped storage power plant. A citizens' initiative has formed against the project. Regional policy currently supports the project. In September 2012, the documents for the plan approval procedure were submitted.
