Punk Lurex is a Finnish band that was formed in Tampere in 1993 . The band plays rock music influenced by punk , reggae and folk with predominantly Finnish lyrics and a melodic female voice in the foreground.

history

Tiina Wesslin (bass, vocals) and Riitta Suojanen (guitar), both fans of the punk band Kollaa Kestää , which was successful in Finland in the late 1970s , covered the songs of their role models and occasionally gave concerts as a tribute to the band in the 1990s. Juha Helminen, former guitarist at Kollaa Kestää, attended one of these events and was impressed. Together with Jyrki Siukonen, formerly the drummer at Kollaa Kestää, the four musicians founded the group Punk Lurex O. K. Tepi Pulkkinen was involved as an additional singer at the first concerts. Their first single Tappajan Silmät ("Eyes of the Murderer"), a cover version of the punk rock classic Gary Gilmore's Eyes by The Adverts , which was released in 1994, was sold out in a few months.

A short time later, Siukonen decided to continue his art studies in Great Britain and left the band. He was replaced by Sami Päivärinta. In the summer of 1995, Punk Lurex O. K. released an EP Veljet, Siskot! ("Brothers and Sisters") with eight songs in the style of British punk rock of the 1977s.

In September 1995 guitarist Helminen was replaced by Kukka Kukkaisniemi. The album Hatut ja Myssyt (“Hüte und Mützen ”), which was released in 1996, was created under the direction of producer Jani Viitanen . This was followed by the album Prolex in 1999. As a backing band for T.V. Smith , Punk Lurex O. K. recorded the EP The Future Used to be Better in 2000 , which contains four other compositions by the British musician. In 2000 Piise Viippo left the band and Sami Päivärinta took his place; Another album Aika Vapaa ("Free Time") was released in 2002 before the group decided in 2003 to take a long break.

At the end of 2008, Tiina Wesslin, Kukka Kukkaisniemi and Piise Viippo decided to start over. They took Pasi Jouhki on as the second guitarist and shortened the band name to Punk Lurex . A year later, drummer Viippo was replaced by Markus Saastamoinen. The band is touring in this formation to this day and released the studio album Puolesta ja vastaan (“For and against”) in May 2012 .

The band has so far produced all of the sound carriers for the Finnish independent label Hiljaiset levyt, most of the sound carriers have also been released by Teenage Rebel Records in Germany.
