Punk in Africa is an independent documentary film from 2012 about punk music in Africa , especially in South Africa .

action

The film traces the development of the punk movement in South Africa during the apartheid period . Since the 1970s, bands and artist collectives have emerged in Durban and Johannesburg in particular who have turned against the social climate of oppression and racism and looked for alternatives. The events related to the Soweto uprising in 1976 were one of the triggers.

The further development of the punk and independent music scene in South Africa until after the end of apartheid in the mid-1990s is presented as well as the underground scenes that have arisen in the neighboring states of Zimbabwe and Mozambique .

Historical original recordings are shown and contemporary witnesses have their say, partly at original locations. They report on their experiences and ambitions at the time. Interviews and concert recordings from Zimbabwe and especially Mozambique are added in the last third of the film.
