Purbalingga is the capital of the administrative district of the same name ( Kabupaten ) in the province of Central Java in Indonesia .
geography
The place with a good 50,000 inhabitants is located in the interior of the island of Java 150 kilometers west of Yogyakarta in a basin that is flanked by several mountain ranges. In the north, for example, are the Slamet and the Dieng Plateau , while the southern part, the Depresi Serayu, is part of the Serayu spring system . The temperature in the region with a tropical climate, a rainy season from April to September and a dry season from October to March is between 23 ° C and 33 ° C with an average of 24.49 ° C. The nearest town is Purwokerto 20 kilometers further west .
history
The place name is of Hindu origin and is derived from the Sanskrit words purba (east) and linga (an abstract representation of the deity Shiva ). Some scattered old Hindu temples point to the founding from the time of the Srivijaya between the 8th and 13th centuries.
In 1900 the local train station was inaugurated by the Dutch steam tram company Serajoedal Stoomtram Maatschappij , but the line was shut down again until 1980, so that the infrastructure, including the rails, is now used by shops for other purposes.
Economy and culture
The wig industry is at the core of the domestic economy . Another mainstay is tourism, for which there are water landscapes as amusement facilities. 15 kilometers north of the city is the hard-to-reach 30 meter high waterfall Curug Ciputut , which is often referred to as a destination for adventurers.
The regular, independent Purbalingga Film Festival is of importance for Indonesian film .
Local sweets souvenirs are Mirasa beans, which are roasted similar to peanuts, and sometimes even charred in the process.
