Purdy Motor SA (also Purdy Motor Group ) is a Costa Rican automobile dealer and former automobile manufacturer based in San José . The company is the fourth oldest Toyota dealer outside of Japan, the market leader in Costa Rica and has several offices in the United States .

history

The company's founder, Xavier Quirós Oreamuno, originally owned a banana plantation. While looking for a suitable vehicle, he came across an advertisement for the Toyota Land Cruiser in a magazine in the 1950s . He ordered two vehicles, one of which he wanted to resell. In fact, he sold both and found pleasure in this activity.

On January 7, 1957, Quirós founded HT Purdy. The company initially consisted of only four people: in addition to the founder, there was also the employee Mario Tanzi, a mechanic and a driver. The company name is said to be derived from the American Henry Terry Purdy. In 1959 Quirós gave up farming. In the same year, Purdy Motor receives the distribution rights for Rambler vehicles in Costa Rica.

As a Rambler dealer, Purdy Motor was replaced by Motorizada de Costa Rica in the 1970s . With the subsidiary ECASA, various brands and models are assembled between 1965 and 1982. The company was able to consolidate itself in the long term through further business areas in the supplier area.

After the death of Xavier Quirós in 1981, the company was continued by his sons.

Purdy Motor consisted of three divisions since 2008: Purdy Motor Costa Rica for the domestic business, Purdy Motor Internacional for the business in Mexico and Purdy Motor Negocios Automotrices Complementarios for the accessories trade. At that time the company had a total of 700 employees. In 2015, 500 people were employed in international business alone (350 in the USA and 150 in Mexico). Lexus Costa Rica for the Lexus brand and Purdy Vehículos de Trabajo for commercial and commercial vehicles were added as additional business areas by 2018 .

According to its own statement, Purdy Motor had been the market leader for new vehicles in Costa Rica for more than 35 years (or since 1971) in 2012. In 2008 Purdy Motor sold 8388 vehicles, which corresponded to a market share of 24%. Another source names 9074 vehicles for the same period. In 2016, 10,092 Toyota vehicles were sold (market share 17.9%).

In 2006, the Ciudad Toyota branch was opened in San José. It is said to be the largest car dealership in Latin America.

The company is regularly recognized by the state and Toyota. An advertisement by Purdy was criticized by the social sciences as distracting from the problems of the world of work.

Mexico and USA

Purdy Motor has expanded internationally since the 2000s. In April 2005, the first branch was opened in Saltillo , Coahuila ( Mexico ). Since 2013 there are two dealerships in Bryan-College Station and in Madisonville ( Texas ). The second Mexican branch was opened in Cuautitlán in October 2013 . At times there was a third company in Chihuahua . In 2015 a dealer in Dallas was taken over.

In 2016 Purdy Motor withdrew from the Mexican market. The branches in the USA have been operated under the Purdy Mobility brand since 2019.

Brands and models

Purdy Motor initially sold Toyota and (from 1959) Rambler models.

When the political framework in 1964 made domestic production lucrative, the subsidiary ECASA was founded to assemble CKD kits. In September 1965, the first vehicle to be manufactured was a 1964 Rambler Classic 660 . The Starlet , Corolla , Corona and Crown models were assembled for Toyota .

Rambler production lasted at least until 1970. Another assembled model was the Land Cruiser. There were also Ford and Volkswagen models.

In 1973 Toyota acquired a 20% stake in ECASA. Toyota production (which had also started in September 1965) ceased in October 1982.

Brands sold currently include Toyota, Lexus (since 2013) and Hino (since 2005). Other brands are Daihatsu (since 2002) and Scion in the USA.

The company has been producing Hino commercial vehicles since 2016. Series 500 trucks are manufactured.

A limited special model of the Hilux was presented to mark the 60th anniversary of the company's founding .

Trivia

  • On the 60th anniversary of its founding, Purdy Motor was the first company in Costa Rica to set a Guinness World Record . The largest car logo in the world (of the Toyota brand) was created in seven and a half to nine hours on an area of almost 32,000 m² with 1,600 vehicles.

  5. Purdy Motor mentions a different date on its website with 1963, which, however, is very unlikely in light of the political conditions.
