prehistory

Coming from Düsseldorf , the Pure-Liner 2 entered Niehl I on December 15, 2018. Over the Christmas days of 2018, both ships were moored at their berth at the head of harbor basin 3 and were unmanned. During this time the water level of the Rhine fluctuated considerably.

Sink after water ingress

At noon on December 25, 2018, the ship Pure-Liner 2 sank within 20 minutes. "Before that, the water had penetrated the ship in such large quantities when it was 'significantly inclined'" that it could not be pumped out by the fire brigade that arrived soon after . However, this largely prevented water pollution by installing oil barriers and pumping out the leaked diesel oil. Since then the ship has been aground in the harbor basin; Depending on the water level, only the roof or most of the superstructures were visible.

After installing steel cables under the hull of the Pure-Liner 2, the floating cranes HEBO-Lift 6 and HEBO-Lift 7 were able to lift the damaged vessel together; to the left the multi-purpose ship HEBO-Cat 15. Salvage

Initially, the appraiser and insurance company worked on investigating the cause of the accident. When the tide was moored, the ship is said to have become wedged against the quay wall as the water level rises, so that it tilted and quickly overran.

The 200 t floating crane HEBO-Lift 6 and the multi-purpose ship HEBO-Cat 15 from the Dutch rescue company HEBO Maritiemservice BV have been in use on site since January 8, 2019 . In order to lift the Pure-Liner 2 , two steel cables were first pulled under its hull.

After the arrival of the 300 t HEBO-Lift 7 floating crane , the Pure-Liner 2 was successfully lifted jointly by both floating cranes on January 14, 2019. Then she was pumped out so that she was able to swim again on its own.

Rework

During the day on January 15, 2019, a small oil spill ship sailed into port basin 3 to pick up traces of oil that had leaked out in the event of an accident and salvage. In the evening, the floating cranes HEBO-Lift 6 and HEBO-Lift 7 left the port of Niehl I after being converted from operational to cruising status, as did the multi-purpose ship HEBO-Cat 15 with the oil spill ship and a motorized barge as deck cargo. Since then, she has been lying alone in the harbor basin waiting to be towed (as of January 16, 2018). In view of the damage inside, her future fate is uncertain.
