The Pyhäjärvi is a lake in the Finnish landscape Pirkanmaa .

Although the name means “holy lake” in modern Finnish , its original meaning may have been “border lake”.

Pyhäjärvi has the shape of the letter “C” with the cities of Tampere and Nokia at the north end and the city of Lempäälä at the south end.

The Pyhäjärvi has an area of 121.61 km² and is located at an altitude of 77.2 m. It is fed by the water of the Tammerkoski rapids, which run through the center of Tampere and drain the Näsijärvi lake system , and the Kuokkalankoski rapids, which drain Lake Vanajavesi and flow into the Pyhäjärvi on its south bank.

The outflow is the Nokianvirta , which leaves the lake at Nokia and flows into the Kokemäenjoki , which flows into the Gulf of Bothnia .
