Kachar Makhkamov

Qahhor Mahkamowitsch Mahkamov or Kachar Machkamov ( Tajik Қаҳҳор Маҳкамович Маҳкамов ; born April 16, 1932 in Khujand , Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic , USSR ; † June 8, 2016 in Dushanbe , Tajik Communist Party, Tajikistan, was a Tajik-Communist Party secretary) Politburo member of the Central Committee of the CPSU and first President of the Tajik SSR.

biography

Machkamow was born into a working class family in Khujand, northern Tajikistan. In 1953 he graduated from the St. Petersburg State Mining University (then Leningrad) and in the same year began to work in a shaft in the city of Shurab in the Sughd province . Over time, he worked his way up to assistant chief engineer and rose to mine manager.

In 1957, Makkamov joined the CPSU and, at the age of only 24, took over the management of the state mining trust "Tajikugol". In 1961 he was appointed chairman of the Khujand Municipal Executive Committee and, two years later, chairman of the State Planning Committee of the Tajik SSR.

Between 1965 and 1982 Makkamov was the deputy chairman and then until 1986 chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Tajik SSR.  

In December 1985, Makkamov was elected First Secretary of the Central Committee (ZK) of the Communist Party of Tajikistan . From 1986 to 1991 he was also a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU and sat in the Politburo of the Central Committee from July 1990 to August 1991 .

In April 1990 Makkamov was elected Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Tajik SSR and in November of the same year President of the Republic. With growing unrest against the Soviet power, the Supreme Soviet of Tajikistan expressed suspicion in the Makkamov government at an extraordinary session in late August 1991 and forced him to resign. A week later, Makkamov resigned from all government offices.

After leaving government business, Makkamov continued his political activities. He was a lifelong member of the Supreme Assembly of Tajikistan and represented the country in the Eurasian Economic Union .
