Qorakoʻl (from qora , “black”, and koʻl , “lake”; Cyrillic Қоракўл ; Russian Каракуль Karakul ) is a city in the Uzbek province of Bukhara , located about 55 km southwest of the provincial capital Bukhara at 197 m above sea level. Qorako'l is the capital of a district of the same name and is located in the lower reaches of the Serafshan river oasis . According to the 1989 population census, Qorako'l had 16,700 inhabitants at that time, according to a calculation for 2009 the population is 24,102.
Qorako'l is on the railway line from Turkmenabat in Turkmenistan to Kogon ; The cultivation of cotton is of particular economic importance . The city was raised in 1980. The majority of the population are ethnic Uzbeks .
The name of the city is an etymological root for the Karakul sheep from Uzbekistan , whose lambskins are traded as Persians .
