The Réserve écologique Fernald is an ecological reserve in the south of the Canadian province of Québec .

It was established in 1995 on an area of 735 hectares. It is located on the Gaspé peninsula in the county of La Matanie 20 km south of Cap-Chat and borders the Parc national de la Gaspésie .

The area protects the imposing north side of the Monts Chic-Chocs , which is characterized by deep valleys in the coastal area. A significant part of the area is between 250 and 450  m above sea level, only to rise steeply to almost 1,100  m . The highest peaks are the Collins, Mattawees and Fortin mountains. The two geological areas of Bras au Saumon and Lac Matapédia differ in that the subsoil of the former consists of volcanic rock, while the lake is a mixture of volcanic and sedimentary rock, such as arkoses , which have a high proportion of feldspar . In the last ice age, the glaciers left layers of Tillit , whereby the long remaining permafrost caused pronounced cryoturbation . This can be seen, for example, in frost pattern floors .

Fir-yellow birch, fir-paper-birch and fir-black spruce forests predominate. These correspond to the Lac Matapédia and Gaspésie ecoregions , the lower and middle Monts Notre-Dame and the Monts Chic-Chocs. Maple forests with yellow birch and fir trees predominate up to a height of 450  m . The late blooming bird cherry can also be found here . The aforementioned fir forests dominate between 450 and 700  m . In the upper regions, especially those exposed to the wind, the province is dominated by crooked vegetation.
