The Río Chambo is the approx. 130 km long right source river of the Río Pastaza in central Ecuador . In the upper reaches the river is also called Río Atillo and Río Cebadas .

River course

The Río Chambo has its origin in the province of Chimborazo in the approximately 3400  m high mountain lake Laguna Atillo in the Cordillera Real . Further south are the mountain lakes Lagunas de Osogoche , which flow over the Río Osogoche to the Río Chambo. It flows through the central high valley of Ecuador in a northerly direction. The E46 highway ( Riobamba - Macas ) runs along the upper reaches. At river kilometer 78 the Río Guamote flows into the river on the left. At river kilometer 45, the Río Chambo runs between the small town of Chambo and the large city of Riobamba 6 km to the west. The Río Chambo finally meets in the province of Tungurahua 5.7 km west of Baños on the Río Patate coming from the north , with which it joins the Río Pastaza. The catchment area covers around 3500 km².
