The Río Puyo is an approximately 46 km long left tributary of the Río Pastaza in the Pastaza province in eastern Ecuador .

River course

The Río Puyo rises in the eastern foothills of the Cordillera Real at an altitude of about 1250  m . The headwaters are 8 km northwest of the city of Puyo . The Río Puyo initially flows 8 km to the east and then turns south. Between river kilometers 32 and 24 it runs along the eastern outskirts of Puyo. At river kilometer 21.5, the Río Pindo Grande flows into the Río Puyo from the right. This flows up to river kilometer 10 in a predominantly south-easterly direction. Then it turns south and finally meets the Río Pastaza.

Catchment area

The Río Puyo drains an area of around 360 km². The catchment area extends over the western edge of the Amazon basin northeast of the Río Pastaza. In the north, the catchment area borders on that of the Río Anzu and that of the Río Arajuno , both of which flow to the Río Napo . In the northeast and east, a 1000 m high ridge separates the catchment area of the Río Puyo from that of the Río Bobonaza .

Water quality

In the catchment area of the Río Puyo are the cities of Puyo and Shell . Most of the population's wastewater enters the river system untreated, so that the water quality of the Río Puyo in the middle and lower reaches is severely impaired. Chlorine-containing bleaches in particular pollute the river.
