The Río Tamaya is an approximately 360 km long right tributary of the Río Ucayali in eastern Peru in the province of Coronel Portillo in the Ucayali region . It shows a strongly meandering behavior with numerous narrow river loops along its entire course .

River course

The Río Tamaya rises in an approximately 500  m high ridge 200 km southeast of the regional capital Pucallpa . This is also the headwaters of the Rio Juruá and the Río Sheshea . The Río Tamaya initially flows 100 km north. At the settlement of Puerto Putaya it takes up the water of the right tributaries Río Putaya and Río Shahuanya. Then the Río Tamaya turns west. At river kilometer 110 the Río Tamaya flows northeast past a large swamp area. This is located in the 1357.37 km² protected area Área de conservación regional Imiría, established on June 15, 2010. About 15 km above the mouth, the Río Tamaya reaches an area that is crossed by oxbow lakes of the Río Ucayali. It flows through a wide oxbow lake to the settlement of Santa Elisa, where the Río Tamaya has broken a meander and flows directly west to the Río Ucayali. The mouth is located at an altitude of about 150  m, 26 km southeast of Pucallpa, 37 km downstream. The connection to the part of the oxbow lake north of the mouth is gradually silting up. The Río Abujao, which flows further north, flows into this . Larger tributaries of the Río Tamaya are Quebrada Yucanya, Río Pichaya del Tamaya, Río Pichaya del Inamapuya, and Río Inamapuya from the right, and Quebrada Shatanya, Quebrada Noaya, and Río Suaya from the left.

Catchment area and hydrology

The Río Tamaya drains an area of around 14,000 km². The catchment area lies entirely within the Masisea district and borders Brazil to the east . In the north the catchment area borders on that of the Río Abujao, in the east on that of the Rio Juruá, in the south on that of the Río Sheshea and in the west on that of the Río Ucayali. The catchment area includes a rainforest area in the west of the Amazon basin . The mean discharge of the Río Tamaya is 694 m³ / s.
