The Río Verde (Spanish for "green river") is an approximately 110 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the Esmeraldas province in northwest Ecuador .

River course

The Río Verde rises at an altitude of about 300  m 35 km north-northeast of the city of Quinindé . The Río Verde meanders, initially 20 km in a west-northwest direction, later in a northerly direction, through the hill country of the northwestern coastal region of Ecuador. Larger tributaries are the Río Popa and Río Chumundé from the left and the Río Meribe and Río Chontaduro from the right. The Río Verde finally flows into the Pacific Ocean near the small town of Rioverde . The E15 highway ( Esmeraldas - San Lorenzo ) crosses the river near Rioverde. Smaller places along the river are Chumundé and Chontaduro .

Hydrology and catchment area

The Río Verde drains an area of ​​2169 km². The mean discharge of the Río Verde is 43 m³ / s. The catchment area borders on that of the Río Cayapas to the north and that of the Río Esmeraldas to the south . The Río Mate runs a few kilometers further east of the lower reaches of the Río Verde.

Fish fauna

The golden border cichlid is one of the fish fauna of the Río Verde .
