The Río Cayapas is a 117 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the Esmeraldas Province in northwest Ecuador .

River course

The Río Cayapas arises at the confluence of the Río Chimbadal and Río Agua Clara at an altitude of about 55  m . The Río Cayapas meanders in a northerly direction through the hill country of the northwestern coastal region of Ecuador. The two most important tributaries are Río Onzole from the left and Río Santiago from the right. The Río Onzole meets the Río Cayapas at river kilometer 41, the Río Santiago at river km 21. Opposite the confluence of the Río Santiago is the municipality of Borbón on the left bank of the river . 16 km and 6 km above the estuary, a larger estuary branches off to the north to the Bocana de Limones . The Río Cayapas forms a funnel mouth over the last 5 km . The mangrove region between the mouth of the Río Cayapas in the south and that of the Río Mataje in the north is protected by the Manglares Cayapas-Mataje Nature Reserve . 25 km above the estuary, about 5 km south of Borbón, the E15 ( Esmeraldas - San Lorenzo ) road crosses the Río Cayapas.

Hydrology and catchment area

The Río Cayapas drains an area of ​​6024 km² (according to other sources: 5919 km²). The catchment area borders on that of the Río Verde to the west, that of the Río Esmeraldas to the south, that of the Río Mira to the east and that of the Río Mataje to the north. The larger tributaries of the Río Cayapas arise on the western slopes of the Cordillera Occidental , which there reaches heights of up to 4000  m . The headwaters of these rivers are protected by the Cotacachi-Cayapas nature reserve . The mean discharge of the Río Cayapas is 403 m³ / s.

Fish fauna

The gold fringed cichlid is one of the fish fauna of the Río Cayapas .
