The Río Yavero , in the upper reaches: Río Mapacho , in the middle: Río Paucartambo , is an approximately 280 km long right tributary of the Río Urubamba in eastern Peru in the administrative region of Cusco . It is not to be confused with the Río Paucartambo , the left source of the Río Perené . The Río Yavero is a kayak water.
River course
The Río Mapacho arises at the confluence of the Río Tinqui (right) and Río Lauramarca (left) at an altitude of about 3680 m . The source rivers drain the northern flank of a glaciated mountain range, the highest peak of which is the Ausangate ( 6384 m ). The river flows north-northwest for the first 160 km and then gradually turns west-northwest. The places Ocongate and Ccarhuayo are located on the upper reaches . Later the river is called Río Paucartambo and passes the small town of Paucartambo at river kilometer 230 and the town of Challabamba 15 km downstream . There are no larger settlements on the river further downstream. In the lower reaches, near the mouth, the river name changes to Río Yavero . The Río Yavero finally meets the Río Urubamba, which flows north, at an altitude of 480 m .
Catchment area
The catchment area of the Río Yavero covers an area of about 5400 km². It stretches like a tube along the course of the river and has a maximum width of about 40 km. In the west it borders on the catchment area of the upper reaches of the Río Urubamba. In the east the watershed runs to the catchment area of the Río Madre de Dios , in the north the Urubamba tributaries Río Yuyato and Río Ticumpinia run .
