Róbert Nagy (cellist)
Róbert Nagy (born March 19, 1966 in Makó ) is a Hungarian musician. Until February 2020 he was principal cellist of the Vienna Philharmonic and until 2018 he was a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna .
Career
Nagy began playing the cello at the age of seven (1973). At the age of 12 he won first prize in the state competition for young cellists. From 1979 he studied at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest with Csaba Onczay and Miklós Perényi and graduated in 1989 (diploma with distinction). In 1987 he was engaged for the first time by Claudio Abbado as a soloist for the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra . In 1989 he moved to Vienna and studied at the Vienna University of Music with Wolfgang Herzer. From 1990 to 1992 he was the solo cellist of the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria . From 1992 to 2020 he was a member of the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera . In 1996 he joined the Association of the Vienna Philharmonic. In 1994 he made his debut as a soloist in Japan. On November 10, 2006, the Róbert Nagy fan club was founded in the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo .

In 1995 Nagy was a founding member of the Vienna Philharmonia Trio. Since 1999 he has been a member of the Vienna Belvedere Trio. Between 1999 and 2005 he was a cello teacher at the Vienna Conservatory . Since 2005 he has been a solo cellist. From 2009 to 2018 Nagy was a university professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. His students include Sebastian Bru, Alexandra Kahrer, Barna Karoly, Stephan Koncz, Clemens Kropfitsch and Bence Temesvári, among many others.
In 2012 Nagy became a member of the Küchl Quartet and also works in the Steude Quartet, as well as in formations of three or four cellists.
Nagy is married to the pianist Éva Kardos.
