geography

Location of Rödigen in the Oberlödla district

The village is surrounded by forest in the Altenburg-Zeitzer Loesshügelland . Fields are only adjacent in the west. In the south, the place merges into the agglomeration of Oberlödla, in which Rödigen is also located. The area was shaped by lignite mining ( Meuselwitz-Altenburger lignite district ). The city center of the district town of Altenburg is 5 km east of the village.

Surrounding places are clockwise in the north Rositz , in the east the Wilhelm-Pieck-Siedlung belonging to Oberlödla and in the south Oberlödla , in the west joins Unterlödla , both as districts of the municipality Lödla.

history

Rödigen, first mentioned as Rodischene in the period from 1161 to 1186, was a small clearing settlement. Originally the place was a hamlet , which in 1445 consisted of four handicrafts , another house and a hunter's house belonging to a Junker. In 1580 there were 35 people living in the village. Rödigen has belonged to the Wettin office of Altenburg since the 16th century , which, due to several divisions during its existence, was under the sovereignty of the following Ernestine duchies : Duchy of Saxony (1554 to 1572), Duchy of Saxony-Weimar (1572 to 1603), Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg (1603 to 1672), Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg (1672 to 1826). With the lignite mining that began in the 19th century and started right on the edge of the village, the place lost its hamlet-like character. In 1871, 174 people lived in Rödigen.

When the Ernestine duchies were reorganized in 1826, Rödigen became part of the newly created duchy of Saxony-Altenburg. After the administrative reform in the duchy, the place belonged to the eastern district (until 1900) and to the Altenburg district office (from 1900). Rödigen had been in the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg since 1918 , which was added to the State of Thuringia in 1920. In 1922 the place was assigned to the Altenburg district. At that time, Rödigen was already part of Oberlödla.

Because of its proximity to the DEA Rositz plant, Rödigen suffered severe damage from Anglo-American bombs on August 16, 1944 and February 14, 1945. On July 1, 1950, Oberlödla and its district of Rödigen were combined with the previously independent Unterlödla to form the municipality of Lödla. The place experienced great growth after the political change in 1989, when the suburbanization of Altenburg occurred in some of the surrounding communities.
