Röse from Gösslunda

The Röse von Gösslunda ( Swedish Gösslunda rör ) is a Röse northwest of Gösslunda near Hulterstad on the Swedish island of Öland . Roes are stone burial mounds that were piled up from about the size of a head, mainly in Sweden .

The Alvar, with its thin ground cover, is not very suitable for human habitation. There are a number of stone settings , menhirs and cairn tombs . They do not form burial fields here , but lie individually or in small groups.

Gösslunda rör was removed and restored for the investigation. The cairn surrounded by curbs has a diameter of around 20.0 m and is 2.0 to 2.5 m high. A bowl is on one of the Ramdstein blocks to the east. In its early phase, the rose was only 10.0 m in diameter. When exactly it was built could not be determined as no grave was found.

12 cremations were found in the hill, mostly consisting of debris of burned bones. An urn grave was found in the north . In the north-eastern area there was a cremation grave with swords and spears as additions, which dates back to the pre-Roman Iron Age (400 BC to the turn of the century). The last burial probably took place during the early Vendel period (650–800 AD). Bronze jewelry and a row of pearls , the remains of a body grave from this time, were found in the southern part of the Röse.

Fourteen other graves were found outside the Röse. One consisted of a stone box made of limestone slabs that contained a female skeleton. The iron belt, jewelry and chain are also dated to the pre-Roman Iron Age. Gösslunda rör and the ground around the cairn was primarily used as a burial place during the Bronze and Iron Ages. Presumably people who were buried here lived in the vicinity of Gösslunda, where the scarce land was not used for burials but for agriculture.
