The reddish root truffle ( Rhizopogon roseolus , syn. Splanchnomyces roseolus Corda (1837)) is a fungus from the family of root truffle relatives .

description

The fruiting bodies are approximately spherical to elongated, often pear-shaped. Their diameter is up to three centimeters in dry specimens. Their color is initially still white, but soon pink to reddish-brownish, sometimes also pale violet-pink. There are root-like mycelial strands at their base . They give off a faint odor. There are numerous fine elastic fibrils or veins which, however, do not protrude and are colored like the peridium or darker. This is 240 - 400 µm thick and has a single layer. The gleba is initially white and turns yellow when it dries. The cavities within are labyrinthine, empty or filled with spores where they are small. They are formed by hyaline (transparent), branched hyphae . The basidia are club-shaped and hyaline and measure 12-13 by 9-10 µm. The sterigmata are as long as the spores, which are uniquely colored, about ocher-yellow-brown, smooth and ellipsoid in shape; they measure 7-16 times 3 - 5 µm.

Similar species

The yellowish root truffle ( Rhizopogon luteolus ) also grows under pines, but is olive-yellow in color and does not redden.

Distribution and ecology

Rhizopogon roseolus is considered a cosmopolitan . In Europe it grows under black pine on calcareous soil. In Central Europe it forms fruiting bodies from August to November. The fungus forms ectomycorrhizae and is used to improve soil in agriculture and horticulture .

use

In East Asia , especially Japan , where it is traditionally known as Shoro, it is considered a delicacy. For the commercial cultivation of the mushroom and its use in pine plantations, special techniques have been developed that have been successfully used in Japan and New Zealand .
