In 1985, ROAR was a temporary project by some Santana members without the involvement of Carlos Santana .

The musicians were Armando Peraza (bongos), Raul Rekow (congas, percussion, backing vocals), Orestes Vilató (timbales, quinto, bongos, backing vocals), Alex Ligertwood (lead vocals, backing vocals), Chester Thompson (keyboard, synthesizer, backing vocals) and Rafael Cornejo (backing vocals). Only Cornejo did not play for Santana, but largely financed the project.

As guitar , bass and drums are completely absent from ROAR, the music on the LP of the same name sounds significantly different from that of Santana. It's rock with pronounced funk, soul and disco echoes. The song We Gotta Do It was a hit in 1985 and was also released as a 12-inch single .
