The RTV 1879 Basel is in Basel beheimateter Handball - and Volleyball Association and is a member of the Swiss Handball Federation and the Swiss Volleyball Association . The club was founded in 1879 as the "Realschüler-Turnverein Basel", in which various sports were practiced. The club has several women's, men's and youth teams. The club colors are black and white.
RTV 1879 Basel is one of the founding members of FC Basel 1893 , as a majority of the members were against RTV's competitive participation in football games.
Handball
In the history of the club so far, both handball players (1960 and 1984) and female handball players twice (1981 and 1984) celebrated the title of Swiss champion.
After three years in the second highest league, the first men's team managed to get promoted again in 2007 and will play again in the top Swiss division, the National League A , from the 2007/2008 season . After relegation to the second highest league in Switzerland in 2013, RTV Basel was able to qualify for the NLA again in the following season. However, this was followed by direct relegation and the first team is aiming for a promotion in the 2017/18 season. In the 2018/19 season, he was promoted to the NLA.

The volleyball players became Swiss Cup winners in 1994 and won the double ( championship and cup) in 1995 and 1996 . There is currently no active volleyball team in the club.
