Raül Romeva i Rueda (born March 12, 1971 in Madrid ) is a Catalan political scientist and politician ( Junts pel Sí ). He held the post of Minister for Foreign Affairs, Institutional Relations and Transparency in the Catalan regional government. He has been in custody since 2017 for his involvement in Catalonia's declaration of independence and was sentenced to 12 years in prison in October 2019.

Personal and career

Raül Romeva grew up in Caldes de Montbui ( Vallès Oriental ) and has lived in Sant Cugat del Vallès since he was 22 years old . He is married to civil rights activist and politician Diana Riba and they have two children.

Romeva holds a degree in Economics from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and a PhD in international relations. In the 1990s he was primarily involved in peace work in the Balkans and headed the UNESCO educational program in Bosnia-Herzegovina . He also worked as a campaign manager for disarmament and conflict prevention for Oxfam . Romeva published several books on post-armed reconstruction, disarmament issues and the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Political career

In 1987 Raül Romeva joined the left-green party Inicitiva per Catalunya Verds (ICV). He ran on the party's list for the European elections in 1994 and 1999 . In 2004 he was elected to the European Parliament for Spain and was a member of the Greens / EFA group until 2014 . During that time he was Vice-Chair of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality and a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defense Policy . During his membership in the European Parliament, Raül Romeva was considered an activist MP and was responsible for 1,600 interventions.

In 2015, Romeva topped the bipartisan list for independence, Junts pel Sí , in the Catalan parliamentary elections. This emerged from the elections as by far the strongest force and has formed the government ever since. Romeva was then appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs, Institutional Relations and Transparency of the Government of Catalonia by the Catalan President Carles Puigdemont in January 2016 . Romeva is the first person to hold such an office for the regional government of Catalonia. After Catalonia's unilateral declaration of independence in October 2017 , he was deposed with the entire regional government, charged with rioting , embezzlement of public funds and disobedience in the context of the criminal proceedings as a result of the Catalonia crisis , and placed in temporary detention because of the risk of fleeing. On October 14, 2019, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison by the Madrid Supreme Court.
